About Toolboks

  • Toolboks is a physical, card-based resource for movement exploration, improvisation, composition, facilitation, and creative process.

    Through 110 cards containing tools, prompts, questions, and frameworks, it offers support for generating ideas, deepening inquiry, developing material, and expanding possibilities within creative practice.

  • Toolboks contains 110 cards, including Tool cards for individual, partner, and group explorations, Add On cards for developing and refining material, Consider cards for reflection and inquiry, and a guide introducing the resource and different ways of working with it.

  • Toolboks is designed as a system rather than a collection of isolated exercises. The cards can be combined, layered, adapted, and revisited in different ways and across different contexts, allowing you to build pathways through a creative process rather than simply respond to individual prompts.

    Each card is intentionally rich and open-ended. Rather than offering a quick prompt with a fixed outcome, the cards propose frameworks, questions, and entry points that can be explored in many different ways. A single card might inspire a short improvisation, an entire studio session, several weeks of research, or become a recurring point of reference throughout a longer creative process.

    Toolboks is designed to support both breadth and depth: offering many possible directions for exploration, while also creating space to stay with an idea, unpack it, and discover what emerges over time.

    Toolboks is intended to be returned to again and again, with each encounter offering new perspectives, discoveries, and directions.

Who is it for?

  • This edition of Toolboks was developed for dance artists, choreographers, movement practitioners, educators, facilitators, and students. It can support both individual practice and collective creative processes.

  • No. While Toolboks was initially developed through the lens of contemporary dance and informed by practices of improvisation and composition, the tools are intended to support movement exploration, creative process, and inquiry more broadly. Toolboks can be used by movers, makers, educators, facilitators, and artists working across a wide range of movement practices and disciplines.

    In some contexts, it may be necessary – and important – to adapt the wording or framing of a tool so that it better supports the people and practices you are working with. You are invited and encouraged to modify the language, translate concepts, and reshape descriptions so that they feel relevant and useful in your specific context.

  • While this edition of Toolboks was developed within the context of dance and movement practice, many of the questions, frameworks, and approaches may also resonate with artists, facilitators, and creative practitioners working in other disciplines.

Working with Toolboks

  • No. Toolboks is intended as a supportive and adaptable resource rather than a prescribed method. You are encouraged to select, adapt, combine, and revisit cards in ways that support your practice, process, and intentions.

  • No. Toolboks is designed to be accessible as a standalone resource, and the accompanying guide offers an introduction to the card categories and different ways of working with them.

    That said, workshops can offer an opportunity to experience the tools in practice, exchange ideas with others, and discover new ways of engaging with the resource.

  • Yes. Toolboks was developed with both individual and collective practice in mind and can be adapted for educational, artistic, and facilitation contexts.

    Many of the tools can be integrated into classes, workshops, rehearsal processes, creative development, and community settings. Toolboks is intended to support and inspire practice rather than prescribe a particular way of working.

  • Absolutely! While some cards are designed for partner or group contexts, many are for individual movement research and creative practice.

  • Yes. The cards are designed to be layered, combined, and revisited. New possibilities often emerge through the interaction between different cards.

Production

  • Toolboks has been entirely produced in Europe.

    Developed and designed in Oslo, Norway and the United Kingdom.

    The cards and booklet have been printed in Slovakia and the box has been produced in Germany.

    We have worked carefully to source high-quality materials and production partners that align with the values and intentions of the project.

  • Yes. We have made conscious choices throughout the development and production process to prioritise durability, responsible sourcing, and long-term use.

    Production takes place in Europe with companies with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification. They ensure that products made from wood as a basic raw material come from sustainably managed forests or meet the conditions of the FSC Chain of Custody. Sustainable forestry protects biodiversity, supports local communities and protects the future for the generations that will come after us.

    Toolboks is shipped entirely plastic-free using sustainable, recycled paper-based materials.

    Toolboks is designed as a resource that can be returned to again and again over many years of practice. Where possible, we have sought production partners and materials that support a thoughtful and responsible approach to manufacturing.

    We recognise that sustainability is an ongoing practice rather than a fixed achievement, and we remain committed to improving our choices as Toolboks continues to evolve.
